The traditioanl celebration I am going to tell you is the Lantern Festival, which lasts two days from January 15th to 16th in the Lunar calendar. Traditionally, this festival marks the end of Chinese New Year, a period of twenty days’ celebration. But since now people often have only a 7-day holiday, it is normally regarded as a separate occasion to relax and have some fun.

Unlike the Spring Festival or the Moon Festival, which focuses on the reunion of the family, Lantern Festival is about entertainment. In ancient China, where there was a continuous curfew, it was the only chance for normal individuals to enjoy the night. Children, adults, and senior citizens would all step out of homes, get together with their own friends, and indulge themselves. Nowadays, although the revelry is not as rare as in the past, most people still cherish it.

There are three customs at this festival. First, eating yuan xiao, which is small rice glue balls, also known as sweet dumplings. Some of them contain stuffing, while others are solid. It varies from place to place. Second, appreciating the sophisticated lanterns. This article is from laokaoya website. Craftsmen would try their best to make the most unique lanterns to attract customers. Thirdly, guessing riddles. This used to be held within the family but now is often organized by the government at the park or empty place. Persons who get answers above a certain number will receive some prizes.

I truly love this festival and its activities. You know, most festivals have been entitled some certain meanings, either to worship the ancestor or emphasize the value of family. I do not think this is wrong, but we definitely need something like the Lantern Festival, where having fun is the only theme.
